The whale watching tour starts from your hotel in Bentota. Your driver will come and pick you up in an air-conditioned vehicle. The tour will need to start early as the whale watching boats will leave by 6.30 a.m. from the Mirissa Harbour. So it is advisable to arrive at the harbor between 6 .00 a.m. to 6.30 a.m.
The whale watching boats include a crew who will guide you in the sea and also life jackets and all necessary safety equipment. The boat also includes a washroom , comfortable seating and a small deck area to look at the sea. You will be able to go to the deck of the boat and take some pictures with the beautiful blue sea. Before starting the journey your captain will explain the journey along with some instructions. Before you start the journey make sure to take the sea sickness tablets. The whale watching tour includes breakfast at another additional cost. You will get some buns and beverages. The departure usually takes place around 7.00a.m.
The entire tour takes around 4-5 hours. During this time you will be able to spot many sea creatures.These include blue whales, fin whales, dolphins, and sometimes Bryde's whales, sperm whales, killer whales, short-finned whales, turtles, and flying fish.Please note that the whale sightings can't be guaranteed, as marine life is unpredictable. However the boat crew will take you to the best sighting spots.
Once the whale watching tour is over you will head back to the mirissa harbor. It will be around noon now. You can explore around Mirissa and have your lunch. The cost for your lunch is not included in the tour package.You can try out some of the local restaurants and taste seafood dishes of your choice. Your travel guide will be able to give you some good recommendations.
After lunch you can take the time to enjoy yourself. Mirissa has one of the most beautiful beaches in Sri Lanka with crystal clear waters and golden sandy shores. You can swim, sunbathe or even read books under the trees at the beach. There are a lot of places to explore in this area as well. Coconut Tree Hill and Parrot Hill are some of the main tourist attractions in Mirissa. Coconut Tree Hill is a famous insta worthy photo location. It’s a private coconut estate located on a high cliff. You will be able to take some good pictures while enjoying the view of the sea from a hill.
Finally you can come back to the vehicle. You can start your way back to the hotel and end your whale watching trip with a big smile and happy heart.
