Diyasaru Park: Timings, Tickets and Attractions

Diyasaru Park Overview

Situated on the Japan Friendship road opposite Diyawanna Lake, Diyasaru Park is an artificially built wetland park. Spread across 60 acres, it is an idle destination to spend a vacation away from the busy city life. The lush greenery preserves consist of many trees, plants, birds, reptiles, butterflies, dragonflies etc.

The word ‘Diyasaru’ means ‘water-rich’ in Sinhalese. The park’s history dates back to 1980; before that, it was a paddy field. Though it’s an artificial wetland park it looks like a natural one. A trip to this awesome place heals the minds and souls of the travellers where they can also take part in activities like boat riding, bird-watching photography, nature sightseeing etc.

Attractions at Diyasaru Park

The park has various attractions inside its premises right from its entrance. Let’s look at the appealing parts of the place and the activities related.

1. Study Centre

Even if we look at the history, the place has great significance for study and research. At present, there are two beautiful large huts right at the entrance which are dedicated to study and group sessions. It is an idle place to learn about the different birds and plant species and wetland management. These huts are also reserved for events that focus on biodiversity learning and management. Seminars, workshops, and gatherings are often spotted in the study centre section of the park.

2. Bird Watching Tower

It is among the well-known attractions inside the Diyasaru Park located in a large waterlogged area. There is a two-story observation tower that allows you to witness the rare bird species and the overall scenery of the park. Photography lovers can relish the spot by capturing photos of the creatures from a different angle. Since birds are the attraction of this wetland park, the observing tower is sensibly established for the great views.

3. Boat Rides

Boat rides at the park offer a thrilling experience to visitors to get the chance to explore the whole venue inside. Since a traveller cannot observe the whole wetland because of waterlogged areas and dense woodlands, a boat ride is the best option to explore the whole place. The canals inside the location allow a wonderful boat trip around the park witnessing its natural beauty, rare reptiles, birds and plantation. You can have a 45-hour paid boat ride inside it.

4. Bird Hide

This is the most amazing adventure you can experience in the camouflaged shelter inside the park. It is built to watch the birds without being watched. You will observe them in their natural behaviour. These different birds play, act and perform various activities in groups and individually. You can also hide yourself in the hut built in the waterlogged area next to the bird hide and observe them through the holes. Photography is a common activity in this section at the Diyasuru.

5. Butterfly Garden

It is one of the most beautiful sections of the park where you will be able to witness the different colourful and attractive butterflies. As per the management, there are over 80 species of butterflies in this garden. Photography lovers can enjoy the location by capturing these brightly coloured flies.
