1. Local Bird Species

Grey Hornbill

This distinctive creature is native to Sri Lanka which has grey upperside and whitish underparts. The bird species has no casque and they are often found in small flocks. The birds appear delicate and beautiful with long and smooth wingtip.

Brown Caped Babbler

It is an endemic resident bird breeding in Srilanka. The creature looks peculiar and has brightinng appearance and has short rounded wings and casque (head tip or cap) with dark color. The bird species is known for their gorgeous melodious call.

Hanging Parrot

Sri Lankan hanging parrot are the most stunning appearing bird species which has a lush, vivid green body. These birds are mostly spotted hanging upside down the tree branches and they feed on fruits and nectar.

Srilanka Wood Pigeon

Another native bird species in the list is the amazing Wood Pigeon which sticks their nest in a tree. The upperbody part of the bird appears dark grey, whereas the underparts are lilac. These creatures are mostly found in wooded ares.

Blue-Tailed Bee Eater

This open country bird species are attractive with its colourful appearance having green and blue plumage and blue tail. These bird creatures are seen in the winter months in the Hanthana bird park that feed on bees and insects.

Osprey

This species are unique among the park habitat that can catch live fish by diving into the water. Osprey are among the widely distributed raptor species which has freaky reversible outer toe (talons). The birds are seen during the migration season inside the park.

Asian Keol

This migratory bird in the Hnanthana bird park is known for its vocal “ko-eeul.” The bird has smooth black to brown upperparts specaled with white. Their visit to the garden happens to be in Winter.

3. Rare and Endangered Species

Sri Lanka Whistling Thrush

The whistling thrus is among the rare species conserved in the park which is known for its whistling calls. These birds are secretive, ground-dwelling bird found only in dense mountain forests in Sri Lanka. Males have a dark blue body whereas females have rufous structure, with blue shoulder patch.

Forest Eagle Owl

It is one of the largest bird in the Hanthna bird garden that resides deeper, more isolated areas of the park, normally. This endangered species are popular for its distinctive hooting calls. It is also of the largest living species of owl that appears gryeish brown.

Best Time to Visit Hanthana Bird Park


Travellers from differents places pay a visit to Hanthana Bird Park through out the year. However, for the best experience, you can come to visit the place from November to April.

This is the time when you get to witness the migratory bird species which are rare and not found even in Sril Lanka. During this time, the pleasant weather also makes traveller comfortably stroll through the bird park.
