6. Itinerary

Sigiriya is considered as the 8th wonder of the world. Our journey to there begins with your driver picking you up from Colombo in an air conditioned vehicle. It’s a short drive from Colombo into the greenery. Once you're at Sigiriya you can start your climb. There are a lot of small shops by the road that leads to the lion rock. You can enjoy a cup of tea with some local delights before starting your way up.

You will see the water gardens first. It’s a collection of pools at the ground level. It is considered a former bathing lagoon for ancient kings. You will be able to witness how such technology was used in Sri Lanka 1500 years back. During your ascend you will see the frescoes. These paintings on rock are one of the most famous things about Sigiriya. It shows a group of women offering fruits and flowers, known as the Sigiriya damsels. Kindly note that flashed photography is prohibited here to preserve these for the future generations.

You will see the mirror wall on your way up next. It is covered with ancient graffiti by visitors of Sigiriya. It consists of poems , tributes and impressions. After around 900 steps in you will come across the two lion paws. This is the reason Sigiriya is also called the lion rock. The intricate architecture reveals so much about Sri Lanka 1000 years back to the past.

As you reach the top of the rock you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. The ruins of king kasypa’s ancient palace is also here. You can see the Pidurangala mountain from here as well as many forests. After this it is the climb back down. Once you have descended you can take a look at the Sigiriya Museum. It has a lot to offer about the history of Sigiriya. It has many artifacts, interesting discoveries on Sigiriya and even a 3-D model of it.

After this you can take a stroll through the Hiriwadunna village. It will take you back in time to how Sri Lankans lived many decades back. You can take a bullock cart ride through the village. There are two bulls dragging the cart and this ride lasts for around 15- 20 minutes. You can even enjoy a boat ride on the serene lake, and witness traditional village activities. After this you can come back to the vehicle. From here you will start the journey back to Colombo. Your adventure will end once you come safely to your hotels.
